Beau has discovered that he likes the water after all. On a recent Saturday trip to Fort Funston, Beau surprised us by running towards the on-rushing waves.

It used to be that he would not even deign to get his toenails wet. We’ve been going to the various Northern California beaches with him since he came home with us in November 2012 from the Big Dog Rescue in Petaluma. When he meets a prospective chase-mate at the beach, they would kick up sand everywhere they went. When the “chase-ee” would head towards the water, Beau would suddenly change course and head for dry shore. When the waves would approach, he would suddenly break into a quick gallop away.

Not anymore! He has discovered the waves are not so bad after all. I can’t help but wonder if the water temperature has anything to do with it. With California going through record high temperatures in the recent weeks, perhaps the water is less than frigid lately.
Whatever the reason, it was wonderful to see him have so much fun! He did go only as far as ankle-deep in the water, however. He also tried to drink it and was reprimanded immediately.

P.S. I do dread the time when he would totally immerse himself in the waves and we would have to deal with a super-wet dripping dog shaking and wringing himself. I almost dread the car ride home…..
One of my favorite places to spend time with my camera is Dog Beach in the Ocean Beach neighborhood of San Diego. At any give time, including midnight, there are at least a dozen dogs frolicking in the surf, and at 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., before and after work, there probably are hundreds!

I’m so glad he discovered that he liked it! My big dog is scared of water, so no trips to the beach with her. It’s like trying to give an alligator a bath.

I think giving her a bath would like giving a thrashing hissing gator a bath.she ain’t have a bath at home anymore.

Great to see Beau had so much fun and so unexpectedly. Fingers crossed that he does not get to like immersing himself totally. On a very hot day maybe he would go in a bit further?

what a milestone – and your photos are great – but how cool that he now goes into the water – and hearing about it – along with the warmth – well I would want to go into that salty water too – 🙂 ❤
