The past three weeks have gone by in a flash. First there were the preparations for various meetings. Then meetings to prepare for more meetings. There were also the preparations for the long trip, the frenzied last minute shopping for my mother and her last minute requests. Sigh! I guess I’d still consider it fun, as long as I pace my self and I don’t get too frantic trying to please too many needs and desires.
We traveled to Manila for various business meetings. It was great to see family, visit with my parents and other relatives who I don’t see often enough. One enjoyable indulgence I also look forward to is meeting up with my old high school friends. I really enjoy seeing them, hear them talk about their families, what they’re up to, what they’ve changed or clung to adamantly. It’s always such a treat.
We met for an early lunch. They were all so accommodating of my whirlwind trip in and out of the city, with back to back meetings daily. On my last day, we squeezed in this lunch get together to catch up. I was touched!
It looks like Felix offers nouvelle cuisine with Filipino and other Asian offerings. The place was bright, friendly, and comfortable. We were started with the “San Raphael,” which is a sinfully rich thinly sliced lechon kawali, deep-fried to a crisp, and served with two sauces, lechon sauce and a spiced vinegar sauce. Can you hear the crunch as I chew?
Then, they brought out the “Gen San,” a spicy cubed tuna sashimi, portioned on small spoons with a salad gathered at the center to balance out the dish. Ummm. Nice!
Of course, we had to have some healthy options. And so, we were served a salad called “Arata,” which is a plate of baby greens served with crispy shrimp, scallops, and cubed fresh tropical fruits, tossed with a light vinaigrette. Yum!
There were more dishes but I lost track, what with the flurry of servers waiting on us hand and foot, pouring, serving, removing, assisting. And the stories about who’s up to what, whose kid is graduating and doing this and that! It was all too confusing! And lots of fun! I think I’d call it pleasurable distraction, if there’s such a thing. And none of us were imbibing any alcohol even!
We finished off the meal with some suman. For those of you who don’t know what this is, it’s sticky rice cooked in coconut milk, sugar, and wrapped in leaves. This time however, the suman was green, and I’m assuming it’s from the infusion of pandan leaf essence. The suman had little bits of cocoa too. A serving bowl of rich thick chocolate sauce accompanied the dish. This was a great finale for our meal!
And yes, it was also an opportune time to celebrate a birthday. This was certainly a wonderful way to cap off my trip. I headed home full of images in my mind’s eye, and stories to share with my hubby.
